Training Program on Advanced Technologies for Water Resources Management held during 11-15 December, 2023

A training program on Advanced Technologies for Water Resources Management, sponsored by the National Water Academy (NWA) was held at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Water Research (ICWaR), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, between 11-15 December, 2023. A total of 24 participants are practicing Chief Engineers and Executive Engineers in the Central Water Commission (CWC).

The workshop comprised lectures and tutorials by experts, covering topics of Introduction to Remote Sensing, GIS and DEM, drought and flood monitoring, Reservoir Operation, Applications to Reservoir Operation, River Basin Planning and Flood Risk Management, Urban Flooding: Introduction to urban hydrology, IDF relationships, Climate change impacts, and Internet of Things (IoT) Applications.

They also visited KSNDMC (Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre) where the officials described the various types of disasters observed in Karnataka, their monitoring and early warning systems. Focusing specifically on the flood early warning systems and briefly on earthquakes and the importance of monitoring near dams.  A live functioning of the Varuna Mitra helpline and instruments used to monitor disasters was demonstrated. The training program also includes a visit to the Smart Water grid laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering where they learned about Drag/Pressure loss reduction experiments, Digital Twin, SCADA (Supervision Control and Data Acquisition), and water quality experiments.
