Training Program on Engineering Hydrology held during 09-21 October, 2023

A training program on engineering hydrology, sponsored by Advanced Centre for Integrated Water Resources Management,  was held at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Water Research (ICWaR), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, between 09-21 October, 2023. A total of 25 participants, who are practicing engineers working in the Water Resources Department, Government of Karnataka underwent training in Engineering Hydrology.

The workshop comprised lectures and tutorials by experts, covering topics of the hydrologic cycle, India’s water resources, rainfall-runoff models, introduction to floods and droughts, precipitation, streamflow, use of remote sensing and GIS in streamflow estimation, abstractions from precipitation, hydrographs, flood routing, groundwater, operational groundwater recharge estimation in India based on GEC methodology, intensity-duration-frequency relationships, and streamflow measurement. All the participants visited Kanva Dam and Manchan Ebele Dam, where officials described the importance of the dam and the functioning of gate operations and other salient features of the dam. They also visited KSNDMC (Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre) where the officials described the various types of disasters observed in Karnataka, their monitoring and early warning systems. Focusing specifically on the flood early warning systems and briefly on earthquakes and the importance of monitoring near dams.  A live functioning of the Varuna Mitra helpline and instruments used to monitor disasters was demonstrated.
